The History of Professional Wrestling in Kansas City

- From the late 1800s to 1988, Kansas City was considered a hotbed of professional wrestling. The lineage of champions in multiple wrestling organizations can be traced to the City of Fountains, and the fan base was considered to be one of the most rampant. The wave of professional wrestling success in the city continued throughout the Twentieth Century until 1988, when Vince McMahon's global World Wrestling Federation ultimately put an end to the independent wrestling territories that once filled up America.
- K.C. ON THE MAT focuses specifically on Kansas City pro-wrestling from 1930 to the demise in 1988. It begins with the back story of the first National Wrestling Alliance Champion, Orville Brown, and his rise as a top promoter in Kansas City. Brown eventually sold his assets out, and the trio of "Texas" Bob Geigel, Harley Race and Pat O'Connor controlled the area until its fall in the late 1980s.

Quickly, the finger of blame was pointed at Benoit's steroid use, so rampant in pro wrestling; the deaths, it was assumed, the result of a steroid-fuelled rage.
- But, an investigation into the deaths of Chris Benoit, his wife and son, by reporter reveals that Benoit also may have been the victim of a physical condition brought on by years of undiagnosed concussions.

- All together, I think Armin Katayan's feature was an interesting piece of work. I'm still dumbfounded that in the 2003 piece that Vince again tried to do the Mr. McMahon schtick after the Bob Costas debacle. Still, I don't think the re-broadcasting of that sequence obfuscated the overall message, which was that too many of professional wrestling best and brightest are dying to young.
- There were two parts of the story that were especially poignant, and more than a little troubling: First, was Teddy Hart's 2003 admission that he may eventually have to take his training "to the next level" in order to make it to the big arena (I wonder if he did mortgage his golden years for fortune of youth); and second, the sight of Marcus Bagwell, admittedly hopped up on pain killers and soma, saying that, in spite of the broken neck, in spite of the chronic pain, and in spite of the premature death of so many of his friends and even more of his contemporaries, he'll never stop wrestling because it's all he's ever done his adult life.
